A lot of people believe it is impossible to eject from a plane going over Mach 3, but it has been done successfully over 50 years ago. For a crew to eject from an SR-71, it was the last resort when all other options were tried. If the pilot could maintain control of the plane, the plane would be slowed down and brought to a lower altitude. Sometimes the plane would just start to break apart at high speeds and there was no other choice than to eject.
